How does Neuro Linguistic Programming work?
Using NLP modality in coaching helps clients to stop, feel and respond to challenges and stimuli that cause them to feel overwhelmed, irritated, pressured, or anxious. It provides clients with the ability to slow the process and give themselves the attention they need to master a challenge, rather than behave in a way that is negative or has detrimental outcomes. It is a powerful tool that when applied supports clients in being able to operate with greater self-mastery and ease; not creating a more intense feeling or a drama that escalates into uncertainty.
Most studies on NLP to date suggest a wide variety of outcomes yet without the introduction of the skills involved in NLP, clients continued to struggle with a significantly higher likelihood of worsening depression and anxiety. It has been our experience that NLP teaches clients to relax into a problem rather than resist it. When used with greater frequency and aligned with other therapeutic modalities, NLP can offer a resolution, comfort through difficulties, and a greater sense of self, offering awareness of negative thought-provoking behaviors and an aligned response. We consider this empowerment to be necessary in order for a client to elevate themselves and have an effective, unparalleled outcome.
NLP supports clients in understanding the inner workings of their own minds and their reactive behaviors so that they are able to implement the techniques they have learned with their practitioner.
What can I expect?
Working with an NLP Practitioner or therapist will include a consultation to explore areas of desired growth and change and an honest self-assessment of one’s own mental blocks and limiting behaviors. The practitioner will review the client’s needs and support them in setting some clear goals to move them forward in their awareness and mastery of their outcomes
The practitioner may teach the client a variety of related techniques including visualization (the forming of mental images that are aligned with how they want to feel), visual-kinesthetic dissociation (a process whereby the practitioner supports a client to create space between them and the feelings that cause them to re-experience trauma or pain), and address negative thinking (thoughts that cause a severe emotional or visceral response in the body), and developing a new way of communicating their story without becoming emotionally vested in it as the truth. In this way, clients are able to share their experiences and feelings without reinjuring themselves, further diffusing their own pain and changing the energy and intensity around it.
How Long Will it Take?
Most NLP Clients notice a reduction in their stress levels within the first session. This rapid result often allows clients to commit to treatment for a period of time ranging from a minimum of 3-sessions, to a round of sessions of about 12-weeks. More severe traumas caused by sexual abuse, family violence, drug addiction, or chronic illness may take longer than 12-weeks but these clients are able to recover, heal, and grow into greater independence. Success will be incumbent upon the client to utilize their skills and tools more frequently to get the best results. Use of the NLP modality can be short-term or long-term, depending on the individual and the extent of the results desired.
NLP is a tool that supports clients in their coaching that helps accelerate their awareness and therefore, their personal growth. It is not a ‘quick fix’. Nothing is. Rather, using this technique in coaching provides the opportunity for clients to gage their own awareness of problems, triggers, and areas of abnormal growth in their developmental process. Clients come to understand how they think and behave and then make a clear and decisive plan for modifying their behavior, reducing the energetic charge on provoked behaviors, and empowering themselves to respond differently, in ways that are more effective and conducive to the outcome they desire. The NLP process provides tools that help clients to process and manage moods, behaviors, and emotions through a series of steps that reprogram the reaction; allowing you to diffuse situations that are known provocations, from within.
Clients are supported to review specific reactions and triggers so that they can process with new perspective and greater command over their behavior and emotions.
